Daenerys and Missandei – Season 4

After learning of Jorah’s betrayal in season four, Daenerys openly displayed her Targaryen temper, angrily exiling him from Meereen. In this deleted scene from the same episode, we see a more vulnerable side of Dany as she stands on the balcony of her rooms atop the Great Pyramid. She silently stares out at the darkening horizon into which Jorah has disappeared. Missandei approaches timidly, asking if there’s anything she can bring her queen. When Daenerys doesn’t reply, Missandei turns to go—but Daenerys stops her, asking Missandei to stay before quietly telling her, “never betray me.”

The scene shows how deeply shocked and affected Dany was by Jorah’s betrayal, and also serves as a reminder for book readers about the prophecy of “three betrayals” Daenerys received in the House of the Undying. While the prophecy isn’t shown in the series, it has played out onscreen, and it predicts that Daenerys will be betrayed three times—once for blood (Mirri Maz Duur), once for gold (Jorah), and once for love. Could this deleted scene, the budding relationship between Grey Worm and Missandei, and Jon’s conversation with Missandei about returning home to Naath be setting us up for the third betrayal? We’ll have to keep watching to find out.
